The form of Marxist socialism developed in Indonesia by Achmad Sukarno (1901–70) during his presidency of 1945–66, characterized by a policy of ‘guided democracy’ and the promotion of national identity. ΚΠ 1949 Fortune Mar. 85/3 Soekarno has a mélange of social philosophies borrowed from Gandhi, George Santayana, and John Dewey. He calls the mixture marhaenism, translatable as ‘common man-ism’. 1966 Economist 20 Aug. 728/1 The black-shirted Nationalist youths proclaiming ‘Marhaenism’, a largely unintelligible but ‘progressive’ political doctrine originated by Mr Sukarno, are at odds with the green-shirted Moslem party youths. 1969 New Yorker 31 May 44/3 The concept of Marhaenism, a Sukarno doctrine which derived its name from that of a poor Javanese farmer, and which Sukarno liked to describe as ‘Marxism adjusted to suit the conditions of Indonesia’.
