释义

Malo-Russianadj.n.

Brit. /mɑːləʊˈrʌʃn/, U.S. /mɑloʊˈrəʃən/
Forms: 1700s– Malo-Russian, 1800s– Malorussian, 1900s– Malorossian. Also with lower-case initials.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Malorossija , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Russian Malorossija, obsolete name for Ukraine (or a derivative such as Malorossijanin a Ukrainian; < malyj little (compare discussion at small adj.) + -o- -o- connective + Rossija Russia, after medieval Greek Μικρὰ Ῥωσσία little Russia, Ukraine (1292)) + -an suffix. Μικρὰ Ῥωσσία ( > post-classical Latin Russia Minor (1335)) was formed in antithesis to Byzantine Greek or medieval Greek Μεγάλη Ῥωσσία great Russia, Muscovy. Compare Little Russian n. and adj. O.E.D.
