单词 mandriarch

mandriarchn.

Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μανδριάρχης.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek μανδριάρχης patriarch (9th cent.) < μανδρίον , μανδρεῖον monastery (6th cent. a.d.; < ancient Greek or Hellenistic Greek μάνδρα pen for animals, place of human habitation, in Byzantine Greek also monastery + -ιον , diminutive suffix) + -αρχης -arch comb. form1. Compare Italian mandriano (Dante, c1319), Hellenistic Greek μανδράρχης person in charge of a μάνδρα ; also archimandrite n.The further etymology of μάνδρα is uncertain: the usual view is that it, and Sanskrit mandiraṃ house, abode, mandurā barn, which are probably cognate with it, are loanwords from a non-Indo-European language, perhaps of Asia Minor. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·ndriˌaɹk) /ˈmændrɪɑːk/.
