Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin malevolus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin malevolus ( < male ill (see mal- prefix) + -volus < velle to wish: see will v.1) + -ous suffix; compare malevolens (see malevolent adj.). Compare earlier benevolous adj.; Latin malevolus is contrasted with benevolus already in post-classical Latin (3rd cent.). In sense 2 after post-classical Latin use in this sense (4th cent.; from 13th cent. in British sources).
Obsolete.
