Etymology: < Anglo-Norman maltolt, maletoute and Middle French malletoste (1340), maletoute (c1340; 1262 in Old French as mautoste , 1296 as malestaute ; French maltôte ) < post-classical Latin malatolta , malatosta (mid 11th cent.; from late 12th cent. in British sources, including Magna Carta) < mala , feminine of malus evil (see mal- prefix) + tolta tax, exaction (early 11th cent.; early 13th cent. in British sources) < tollitus, past participle (replacing classical Latin sublātus) of tollere to raise, take. Compare Italian malatolta robbery, extortion (14th cent.), Portuguese malatosta a tax on wine (mid 14th cent.).
