单词 manchurian
释义

Manchurianadj.n.

Brit. /manˈtʃʊərɪən/, U.S. /mænˈtʃuriən/
Forms: 1700s Mansiourian, 1800s Mandschurian, 1800s Mantchurian, 1800s– Manchurian.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Manchuria , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Manchuria, the name of a historical region in north-eastern China, now consisting of the modern Chinese provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning + -an suffix. It is not apparent in which European language the place name Manchuria was first formed. It may be < Manchu n. + -r- + -ia suffix1, with euphonic medial r , perhaps after place names in -uria such as Etruria , Liguria . An alternative explanation is that Manchuria was inferred (in English) from the adjective, and that this is based on Dutch †Mansiourische (1704 in the source translated in quot. 1706 at sense A.), itself perhaps < †Mansiouwer a Manchu (1705 in N. Witsen, Noord en Oost Tartarye 210/2; presumably formed with -er , suffix indicating nationality) + -isch -ish suffix1. Compare Russian †manžurskij, †manzurskij (1740); in the 17th cent. the Russian term for the region was either Tatarija or Bogdagaj and for the language bogdojskij jazyk ( < Mongolian Bogdy majesty, heavenly, sacred, emperor).
