Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Or (iii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French magisme , Latin magismus ; magus n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: Either < French magisme (1697) or post-classical Latin magismus (T. Hyde, 1700), or independently < magus n. + -ism suffix. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mēi·dʒiz'm) /ˈmeɪdʒɪz(ə)m/.
Obsolete.
