Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Magellanus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Magellanus < the name of Fernão de Magalhães (c1480–1521), Portuguese explorer, the first European to pass through the channel now called the Straits of Magellan into the Pacific Ocean. N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation with /-ɡ-/, as do (for British English) all editions of D. Jones Eng. Pronouncing Dict.; editions of Webster from 1854 onwards record (for Magellanic) only the pronunciation with /-dʒ-/.
