Etymology: < Portuguese macumba < a Bantu language of western Central Africa, perhaps Kimbundu. Compare French macoumba, macumba (1948).Explained as < Kongo makúmba protuberant navel (because dancing navel to navel is a characteristic macumba practice) by J. Daeleman, in Vox Romanica (1980) 39 116.
