Etymology: < macro- comb. form + molecule n. In sense 2 after German Makromolekel (Staudinger & Fritschi 1922, in Helv. Chim. Acta 5 788; now usually Makromolekül).
Chemistry.
1. A group of molecules in a crystal bound together in a characteristic shape, which was once believed to account for the symmetry of the crystal. Obsolete.
