Etymology: Shortened < the plural of demesne n. 3 (compare variant forms listed s.v.); see also main adj.1 For formation compare maine n.1In its α form, the word has been treated both as a plural and as a singular noun. The β. forms (all plural) show early analysis of the word as singular with the addition of an analogical plural ending. Attested also in place and field names, earliest in:1387 in A. M. Armstrong et al. Place-names Cumberland (1952) III. 69 Maynes.
