Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: magnet n., -ize suffix.
Etymology: < magnet n. + -ize suffix, after magnetism n. Compare French magnétiser (1781 or earlier in sense 2, 1835 in sense 1, 1907 in sense 3a, although 1821 in reflexive use in sense ‘to become magnetic’).
1. transitive. To draw or attract as a magnet does; to fascinate or charm. Occasionally intransitive.In quot. 1658 apparently an isolated early use. In later use chiefly a figurative use of sense 3, often with a mixture of sense 2.
