Etymology: < Luganda (o)lukiiko audience-hall, council, levee, parliament < (o)lu-, class prefix + -kiiko < the verbal base of (o)kukiika to attend court or council, to call formally on a leader (although these senses of the verb may be later developments, after the noun).In Buganda, the lukiiko is a traditional institution which took a modern parliamentary form in 1900; the lukiiko of Busoga was instituted (on the Buganda model) with the foundation of the Busoga kingdom from an earlier confederacy in 1906.

The parliament of the kingdom of Buganda in central Uganda, and of the kingdom of Busoga in eastern Uganda. In early use also: an assembly or levee held by the king of Buganda.
