Etymology: < the name of George Osborne, British resident at Bustee (now Basti) in Oudh, India (see quot. 1870) + -ite suffix1.
Mineralogy.
A rare mineral of the cubic system which consists of titanium nitride, TiN, and occurs as small brassy-yellow octahedra in some stony meteorites.Osbornite was identified in a meteorite which fell at Basti, Oudh, India, on 2 December 1852.

Its paragenesis may be unique, and may be due to melting of a mineral assemblage including Fe-Ni metal, schreibersite, daubreelite, osbornite, or heideite and subsequent crystallization of phosphides from the melt.
