单词 low sunday
释义

Low Sundayn.

Brit. /ˌləʊ ˈsʌndeɪ/, /ˌləʊ ˈsʌndi/, U.S. /ˈloʊ ˈsənˌdeɪ/, /ˈloʊ ˈsəndi/
Forms: see low adj. and n.2 and Sunday n. and adv.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: low adj., Sunday n.
Etymology: < low adj. + Sunday n., probably with allusion to the resumption of ordinary church services on this day after the celebration of Easter (compare quot. 1866), and perhaps also with allusion to the fact that, as the Octave Day of Easter, this Sunday is considered part of the feast, though in a lower degree than Easter Sunday. The name is apparently not paralleled in Latin, where the Sunday was called Dominica in albis depositis ‘Sunday with white robes put aside’ (usually shortened to Dominica in albis) until 1969, with reference to the custom that the neophytes who had been baptized at Easter put their white baptismal robes aside on this day. Since 1969, the official name of the feast in the Roman Catholic Church has been Dominica secunda infra octavam Paschae ‘Second Sunday within the Octave of Easter’.
The Sunday following Easter Sunday. Cf. Quasimodo Sunday at Quasimodo n.1
