Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hand n., grith n.
Etymology: < hand n. + grith n. Compare church grith n.With king's handgrith compare king's hand-sold grith at hand-sold adj. and the post-classical Latin parallel cited at that entry. In Old English apparently only in texts associated with Wulfstan, Archbishop of York (d. 1023), who drafted the law codes that include the formula containing the word. Quot. lOE1 was also probably written (or rewritten) by Wulfstan; quot. lOE2 is a Latin translation of quot. lOE1.
Anglo-Saxon Law. In later use historical and rare.
Security, peace, or protection given by a person. Only in king's handgrith and variants: protection or security guaranteed by a king's authority or power. Cf. church grith n., mund n. 2.In quot. 1691 interpreted as the crime of the breach of such a security.
