β. Old English–Middle English hondful, early Middle English hontful, Middle English hondfull, Middle English honful, Middle English hoonful.

Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch hantvol (Dutch handvol ), Old Saxon handful (Middle Low German hantvul ), Old High German hantfol (Middle High German hantvol , German Handvoll ) < the Germanic base of hand n. + the Germanic base of -ful suffix. Compare the etymologically distinct Old Icelandic handfyllr , in the same sense ( < hand- , combining form of hǫnd hand n. + fyllr fill n.1).In Old English the word is a true compound (not simply a syntactic combination of (postposed) adjective and noun), although its inflection as a strong feminine reflects the original agreement of the adjective with the feminine noun Old English hand hand n.; compare discussion at -ful suffix 2. In addition to the standard Middle English plural handfuls , the plural form handsful is attested from the Middle English period onwards; it has frequently been criticized in usage guides (compare discussion at -ful suffix 2). Compare:c1400 Femina (Trin. Cambr.) (1909) 20 And bothe þyse handes fulle In frensh men clepeþ galeynes.1563 T. In sense 6 with humorous reference to the five fingers of the hand.
