Etymology: In α. forms < love n.1 + in prep. + idleness n. In β. forms < love n.1 + and conj.1 + idleness n.; compare earlier love-and-idle n. Compare also heartsease n. 2.The reason for the name is unclear. Compare:1863 R. C. A. Prior On Pop. Names Brit. Plants 139 Love in idleness, or Love and idle, or, with more accuracy, Love in idle, ie. in vain, the pansy, a name that perpetuates a current phrase, as in the couplet, 'When passions are let loose without a bridle, Then precious time is turned to love and idle' (Taylor) but why it was attached to this flower, we are not informed.
Chiefly English regional. Now rare.
