Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; apparently modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: lord n., wood n.1
Etymology: < lord n. + wood n.1, apparently after modern Greek regional (Cyprus) το ξύλον του αφέντη liquambar orientalis, lit. ‘the wood of the Lord’, so called on account of its main role as an ingredient of incense for use in Christian worship.Medieval Greek αφέντης ( > modern Greek αφέντη ) is the etymon of Ottoman Turkish efendi lord, master (see effendi n.), which apparently influenced the form cited in quot. 1745.
Obsolete.
The sweet gum tree of the eastern Mediterranean region, Liquidambar orientalis (see liquidambar n. 2), which yields a fragrant resin (a kind of storax).
