The day of official adoption of the euro as currency; spec. 1 January 2002, the day on which the euro became the sole official currency of the first countries to participate in European Monetary Union.Quot. 1996 refers to 1 January 1999, the date upon which the euro (Euro n.2 1a) was officially adopted by those countries. The euro coins and banknotes were first issued on 1 January 2002.
