Etymology: < loca- (in local adj.) + -vore (in -ivore comb. form).Coined by Jessica Prentice in 2005 as the name for an informal group of which she was a founding member, committed to supporting local and sustainable food systems in the San Francisco area (see quot. 2005¹). She and the other members of the group set themselves the challenge of eating only foods grown or harvested within a 100 mile radius of San Francisco for an entire month. The name was apparently coined specifically for the newspaper article from which quot. 2005¹ is taken.

A person whose diet consists only or principally of locally grown or produced food; frequently attributive.
