Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item, and partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: liberal adj., art n.1
Etymology: < liberal adj. + the plural of art n.1, after classical Latin artēs līberālēs, Middle French arts liberaux (13th cent. in Old French; French arts libéraux).
Originally: the seven subjects of the trivium (grammar, rhetoric, and logic) and quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy) considered collectively (now historical). In later use more generally: arts subjects as opposed to science and technology (now chiefly North American). Cf. liberal adj. 2.
