Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: light n.1, year n.
Etymology: < light n.1 + year n., probably after German Lichtjahr (O. Ule 1851, in Deutsches Museum 1 727), itself after Wegstunde (literally ‘way-hour’) length of space that a person can walk in one hour (late 18th cent. or earlier).
1. Astronomy. A unit of astronomical distance equivalent to the distance that light travels in a vacuum in 365¼ days.Approximately equal to 9.46 × 1012 km (5.88 × 1012 miles).
