Etymology: < light n.1 + value n.
1. A measure of the amount of light obtainable from a combustible material expressed as a multiple of cost, weight, etc., relative to some standard reference material, typically spermaceti; (also) the illuminating power of a particular light or lamp as a multiple of that of some standard reference source of light such as a candle (cf. candle n. 1d, candle power n. at candle n. Compounds 2). Now chiefly historical.
