Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin fallāc-, fallāx; French fallace.
Etymology: Either (i) < classical Latin fallāc-, fallāx (see below), perhaps after fallace n., or (ii) < Middle French fallace (although this is first attested later: second half of the 15th cent.) < classical Latin fallāc- , fallāx deceitful, treacherous, misleading, deceptive, false, counterfeit < fallere to deceive (see fail v.) + -āx (see -acious suffix). Compare Italian fallace (13th cent.).
Obsolete. rare.
