Money or other things that may be legally tendered or offered in payment; currency prescribed by law as that in which payment may be made.In the United Kingdom, Bank of England notes are legal tender up to any amount throughout the country; fifty-pence coins are legal tender for sums not exceeding £10; other current cupro-nickel coins for sums not exceeding £5; and current bronze coins for sums not exceeding twenty pence (1988).
