Etymology: < †Lettonia, a former name of the country of Latvia (1688 or earlier; < post-classical Latin Lettonia (1599 or earlier; < Letton- , Letto Lett n. + -ia -ia suffix1)) + -an suffix, probably after e.g. Lapponian n., Livonian adj. (compare Estonian n., Estonian adj.). Compare French †lettonien (1729 or earlier as noun denoting the Latvian language, 1768 or earlier as noun denoting a Latvian person, 1776 or earlier as adjective), and also French letton (see Lett n.). Compare earlier Lettic adj., Lettish n., and later Latvian adj., Latvian n.
