Etymology: Shortened < Lacryma Christi n.Compare the following earlier examples of lacrima (and lacrymae ) denoting a different kind of wine, from central southern Italy ( < Italian lacrima (1522 as †lagrima ), extended use of lacrima , (now nonstandard) lagrima tear (first half of the 13th cent.) < classical Latin lacrima tear: see lachrymal adj.):1588 T. Kyd tr. T. Tasso Housholders Philos. f. 6 Homer calleth it [sc. wine] black, hauing reference to some particuler Wine that was then in price, as is nowe our Lachrima [It. lacrima], which though it bee prest from one selfe same Grape as the Wine of Greece is, hath yet a vermillion couller.1658 T. Watson One Thing Necessary 34 There is a kind of wine you call lacrymae, which signifies tears.
