Etymology: Probably partly < Italian gransignore (14th cent. or earlier denoting a great noble; 16th cent. denoting the Ottoman Sultan; < gran grand adj. + signore signore n.); and partly < Middle French, French grand seigneur (13th cent. in Old French denoting a great noble; 16th cent. denoting the Ottoman Sultan; < grand grand adj. + seigneur seigneur n.). With the form variation shown by the second element compare also signore n., signor n., seigneur n., seignior n.
