1. Politics. A group of unofficial or private advisers on whom a head of government, originally the President of the United States, appears to rely heavily; a similar group acting as advisers to any holder of elected office. In early use depreciative, with the implication that the group wields undue influence.Originally used by opponents of President Andrew Jackson (1767–1845) with reference to the group of politicians, journalists, lawyers, and businessmen who advised him during his conflict with Vice-President John C. Calhoun (1782–1850) in the early 1830s. Quot. 1833 is taken from the newspaper that most prominently supported Calhoun at that time.
