Etymology: < the initials G.P. /dʒiː piː/general purpose’, probably influenced by the name ‘Eugene the Jeep’, a creature of amazing resource and power, first introduced into the cartoon strip ‘Popeye’ on 16 March 1936 by his creator E. C. Segar.
Originally U.S.
A small, sturdy, four-wheel-drive army vehicle, used chiefly for reconnaissance; a similar vehicle in non-military use; hence (colloquial) any vehicle.
