Origin: From proper names. Etymons: proper names John, Dunn.
Etymology: < the male forename John (see John n.) + the surname Dunn. In sense 1 probably as rhyming slang for one , perhaps immediately reflecting the name of a historical John Dunn (for possible candidates, see note). In sense 2 probably after gendarme n. or johndarm n.; compare also John n. 3.In sense 1, perhaps < the name of John Dunn (1790–1861), Scottish-born Australian banker, who was Managing Director of the Commercial Bank of Tasmania from 1829–57, and whose signature appeared as that of cashier on banknotes issued during this period, although compare also the name of John Dunn (1846–66), notorious Australian bushranger or outlaw, who was captured after a gunfight with police and hanged in March 1866.
