Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin praefīdent-, praefīdēns.
Etymology: < classical Latin praefīdent-, praefīdēns trusting too much, over-confident < prae- pre- prefix +fīdēns confident, use as adjective of present participle of fīdere to trust (see faith n. and int.). Compare earlier confident adj., diffident adj., and prefidence n.
Obsolete. rare.
Overconfident, rash.
