Etymology: < Jain adj. + -ism suffix. Compare earlier Jainist n.
A non-theistic religion, originating in India in the 6th cent. b.c., which teaches liberation from the cycle of incarnation (cf. moksha n.) by perfection through successive lives, and non-injury to living creatures, and is noted for its ascetics.Jainism was founded as a reaction against the teachings of orthodox Brahmanism.
