1843 Penny Cycl. XXVI. 177/1 The principal metres used in the hymns of the Vedas are the Jagatî, Gâyatrî, and Trishtup.
1869 F. M. Müller tr. Rig-Veda-Sanhita p. cxxx I maintain by no means that this was the actual origin of G̱agatî metres... Theories..would wish us to look upon the hendecasyllabic Trishṯubh as originally a dodecasyllabic G̱agatî, only deprived of its tail.
