Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: askance adv.
Etymology: Apparently < askance adv., with alteration of the ending perhaps after cant n.1, or perhaps by association with aslant adv. or asquint adv., both attested earlier in similar senses and constructions. Compare earlier askanted adj.
