Etymology: < Old French assesse-r < late Latin assessāre , frequentative of assidēre to sit by (e.g. as an assessor or assistant-judge), in late Latin to fix or apportion a tax, to assess, < ad- to + sedēre to sit. In modern French asseoir ( < Latin assidēre ) is used in this sense: compare assize v.
