释义

Pinnipedian.

Brit. /ˌpɪnɪˈpiːdɪə/, U.S. /ˌpɪnəˈpidiə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pinnipedia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pinnipedia, group name ( J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 138) < classical Latin pinni- pinni- comb. form + ped- , pēs foot (see -ped comb. form) + -ia -ia suffix2, perhaps after classical Latin pinnipēs wing-footed (one isolated attestation in Catullus, as an epithet of Perseus).
Zoology.
With plural agreement. An order or suborder of amphibious carnivorous mammals comprising the seals, sea lions, and walruses, which have the limbs modified as flippers for swimming but which breed on land. The Pinnipedia have frequently been regarded as a subdivision of the order Carnivora, and they are so treated in some of the most recent schemes (in which the group is renamed as either Phocoidea or Pinnipedimorpha).
