Etymology: < pinni- comb. form + -ped comb. form, after either scientific Latin Pinnipedes, former group name (e.g. J. C. Schaeffer Elementa Ornithologica (1774) Table 8) or Pinnipedia, order name (see Pinnipedia n.). Compare French Pinnipèdes (1818). Compare earlier pinnatiped adj. and also pinnatiped n.
