Etymology: < Islam n. + -ite suffix1, perhaps originally after French islamite Muslim (1747 or earlier as noun, 1780 or earlier as adjective). Compare earlier Islam n. 1. With use as adjective compare Islamitic adj., earlier Islamic adj., and slightly earlier Islamitish adj.
