Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pomelé.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman pomelé and Middle French pommelé (c1300 in Old French as pommelé ), either < pomel pommel n.1 + -y suffix5 (compare Old French pomelé (of a stick or staff) knobbed (c1230); compare later pommelled adj. 2), or < pome pome n.1 + -el -el suffix2 + -y suffix5 (compare earlier pomelé dappled (see pommely adj.) and later †pommelé round like an apple (1611), use as adjective of the past participle of pommeler to assume a rounded form (1556; now obsolete in this sense); compare later pometty adj., pommé adj.).
Heraldry. Now rare.
Of a cross: having the arms terminating in pommels or knobs; = pommé adj.
