Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἄρτιος , -ad suffix¹.

Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄρτιος (of numbers) even ( < ἄρτι just, exactly < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin ars art n.¹, Armenian ard recently, Lithuanian artus (adjective), arti (adverb) near) + -ad suffix¹. Compare perissad adj., perissad n.This distinction of chemical valency appears to have originated with Odling (compare quot. 1864 at sense A. and quot. 1922 at sense B.).
