Etymology: < Middle French, French artériotomie (late 16th cent. in Paré) and its etymon post-classical Latin arteriotomia operation of cutting into an artery (5th cent. in medical writers) < Hellenistic Greek ἀρτηριοτομία < ἀρτηριο- arterio- comb. form + ancient Greek -τομία -tomy comb. form.

1. The operation of cutting into or opening an artery (in early use esp. for the purpose of bloodletting); an instance of this. Also: an incision made in an artery.
