Etymology: Alteration (probably after re- prefix by association with reconvalesce v., reconvalescent n.) of Ervalenta, the name of a similar preparation (1843 or earlier, originally in translations from French) < French Ervalenta (1841 in the title of a pamphlet by J. Warton (see quot. 1848), or earlier), irregularly < classical Latin ervum , kind of cultivated vetch (see ers n.²) + lēnt- , lēns lentil (see lens n.). Compare German Ervalenta (1843, in a summary of a French paper, or earlier; < French).In the fuller form Revalenta Arabica showing a phrasal construction with the feminine of classical Latin Arabicus Arabic adj.¹; the motivation for the name is uncertain.
