Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin in pectore.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin in pectore (1557 or earlier in this sense), specific use of classical Latin in pectore < in in prep. + pectore , ablative of pectus breast (see pectus n.). Compare earlier in petto adv.
With reference to the appointment of a cardinal by the Pope: privately; in secret. Cf. in petto adv.
