Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Elysée.
Etymology: < French Elysée, the name of a palace on the Avenue des Champs Elysées in Paris which serves as the official residence of the President of the French Republic, (hence) the French Government (both 1849 or earlier in this sense; more fully Palais de l'Elysée (1809 or earlier)), specific sense development of élysée Elysium (16th cent. in Middle French: see Elysium n.).
In full Elysée Palace: a building in Paris, on the Champs Elysées, the official residence of the French head of state: hence used as a synonym for the head of state and his advisers, or the Government, of the day.
