Etymology: < arrow n. + grass n.¹ With early use in sense 1 compare arrowroot n. and discussion at that entry; subsequently, denoting marsh plants, with allusion to the appearance of the burst seed capsule, which has a ‘three-barbed’ appearance (compare with similar semantic motivation the genus name Triglochin: compare triglochid adj.). In sense 2 with allusion to the use of stalks of the plant to make arrow shafts; perhaps compare arrow n. 5b.
