单词 ignorantine
释义

Ignorantineadj.n.

Brit. /ˌɪɡnəˈrantɪn/, U.S. /ˌɪɡnəˈræntn/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ignorantin.
Etymology: < French ignorantin (1752 as adjective in frères ignorantins , designating the Christian Brothers; 1829 as noun) < ignorant ignorant adj. and n. + -in -ine suffix1, after the French names of other Roman Catholic religious orders, e.g. bénédictin Benedictine adj., capucin Capuchin n.The order was so called on account of the fact that it consisted solely of lay brothers; a clause in its constitution prohibited the admission of priests with theological training. During the French Enlightenment the name was sometimes also used with ironic allusion to the educational role of the order. N.E.D. (1899) additionally defined this word as designating the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God, a Roman Catholic order founded in the 16th cent. by João de Deus, a Portuguese carer for the sick, who called his followers ignorantes (plural) in Latin. This order came to France at the beginning of the 17th cent., and they were sometimes known as frères ignorants (1593); compare earlier ignorant n. 3 and Ignorant Friars n. at ignorant adj. and n. Compounds. However, evidence for either French ignorantin or English Ignorantine in this sense is lacking.
Now historical.
