单词 i-fo
释义

i-fon.adj.

Forms: Old English gefa, Old English gefah (as adjective), early Middle English ifa, early Middle English ifo, early Middle English iua, early Middle English iuo, early Middle English ivo, early Middle English yfoh, early Middle English yuo. Plural Old English gefaan (dative plural), Old English gefan, early Middle English ȝefo, early Middle English ifan, early Middle English ifoan, early Middle English ifon, early Middle English iuan, early Middle English iuo, early Middle English ivon, early Middle English yuon, early Middle English yvo.
Origin: Probably a word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Probably < the same Germanic base as Middle Dutch gevee at enmity, hostile, at feud, Old High German gifēh hostile, repulsive, outlawed, at feud (Middle High German gevēch hostile) < the base of y- prefix, denoting mutual relationship (compare y- prefix 2) + the base of foe adj.Alternative etymology. For alternative suggestions, apparently based on the fact that no equivalent unprefixed adjective is attested in Old High German, see A. L. Lloyd & O. Springer Etymol. Wörterbuch des Althochdeutschen (2009) IV. 247. Old English adjective. Despite the fact that the Old English (weak masculine) noun appears to have originated as a noun use of the Germanic prefixed adjectival base, it is noteworthy that the corresponding (prefixed) adjective is rare and late in Old English, and is more likely to represent a secondary development from the noun by analogy with the related and much more common unprefixed fāh foe adj. Compare foeman n.
Obsolete.
A. n.
A foe; an enemy, esp. in warfare or in a deadly feud. Also in figurative contexts and extended use.
