Origin: Of uncertain origin.

Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps related to French ressaut , †resault (1651) or its model Italian risalto (in architecture) ornamental relief (a1568; < ri- re- prefix + saltare : see saltate v.); the ending in -ant , -aunt in English could perhaps result from analogy with the form variation shown by other words (compare e.g. forms at admiral n., bleaunt n.), although the later date of first attestation in French and Italian than in English is surprising.A connection with Middle French ressentir resent v., as has sometimes been suggested, seems very unlikely on both formal and semantic grounds. The later uses result from revival of the word from historical documents.
